You’re Not Doing Anything Wrong: Has Healthy Living Become Too Complicated?

There’s a particular kind of frustration that comes from making a genuine effort to look after yourself and still wondering whether you should be doing more.

You move. You eat reasonably well. You try to get enough sleep. And somewhere along the way, the supporting cast has grown.

There’s collagen on the counter. Magnesium beside the kettle. Vitamins in the cupboard. Electrolytes in your gym bag. Perhaps a bag of creatine you bought after hearing that women should be taking it, although you’re still not entirely sure what to do with it.

On paper, you’re doing rather well. Your kitchen cupboard certainly is.

None of those products is necessarily a bad idea. The interesting thing is how normal it has become to accumulate them. Skin needs one thing. Strength another. Hydration another. Energy another. Bones another.

Which raises a question we don’t ask very often: when did looking after one body become so fragmented?

The supplement aisle has departments. Your body doesn’t.

Walk into almost any health shop and the human body has been helpfully organised for you. There’s skin and beauty, sports nutrition, energy, bones and joints, vitamins and minerals, hydration.

It makes perfect sense if you’re arranging shelves. It makes rather less sense if you’re a human body.

The categories we use to shop aren’t the categories our biology uses. Vitamin C is a good example. Most of us probably associate it with oranges and immunity, yet it also contributes to normal collagen formation for the normal function of skin, cartilage and bones. Magnesium, meanwhile, contributes to normal muscle function, normal energy-yielding metabolism, electrolyte balance and the maintenance of normal bones.

The labels are separate. The biology isn’t.

That doesn’t mean individual supplements don’t work, or that taking nutrients separately somehow makes them less useful. Different people have different nutritional needs, and single ingredients can be valuable. The more interesting point is that shopping for nutrition one concern at a time can encourage us to think about the body that way too.

Collagen may be the perfect example.

We tend to think of collagen as a beauty ingredient, yet it is the most abundant protein in the human body and an important structural component of skin, bone, cartilage, tendons and other connective tissues. In other words, your body has never considered collagen a skincare product. We did that.

There’s another useful distinction here. Providing collagen and forming collagen aren’t quite the same question. Vitamin C, for example, contributes to normal collagen formation. That doesn’t make collagen unimportant, or mean combining ingredients creates some magical effect. It simply reminds us that biology rarely revolves around one hero ingredient doing one hero job.

The same principle appears elsewhere. Muscle isn’t just a protein project. Normal muscle function involves minerals including magnesium and potassium. Hydration isn’t simply about drinking the biggest possible bottle of water; fluid balance involves water and electrolytes, with needs changing according to things such as activity, temperature and sweat loss.

And then there’s creatine, an ingredient that spent decades with a rather unfortunate marketing department. For many women, the word still conjures up bodybuilding tubs and enormous biceps. Yet creatine plays a role in rapidly supplying energy to cells, particularly during high-demand activity, and research specifically in women has grown considerably. A major review highlighted differences in creatine metabolism between women and men while also pointing out that women have historically been comparatively understudied in creatine research.

That doesn’t mean every single woman needs creatine. It does mean the old idea that it belongs exclusively to bodybuilders has rather outlived the science.

This matters because strength itself becomes increasingly valuable as we get older, not because everyone needs to become an athlete, but because strength is astonishingly ordinary. It’s carrying a suitcase upstairs, gardening, getting up from the floor, walking up a steep hill or lifting a child.

Strength is one of those things that looks like fitness until you realise it’s really freedom.

Collagen, muscle, hydration, energy, bones: we experience these things together. It’s mostly the packaging that separates them.

The other problem with complicated nutrition

There’s a second problem with building a nutrition routine one product at a time. Eventually, somebody has to remember all of it.

You can create an immaculate wellness routine on a Sunday afternoon. Then Tuesday happens.

You slept badly. Work explodes. Someone needs picking up. Dinner is late. You can’t find your keys. The washing machine has started making a noise that suggests financial consequences.

Suddenly, the routine involving three tubs, four capsules, a hydration tablet and something you’re supposed to take “preferably away from food” feels less like self-care and more like administration.

That’s the test we don’t talk about enough: does your routine only work on your best day, or can it survive your worst week?

Convenience isn’t the point of good nutrition, but consistency matters. An elaborate routine that repeatedly falls apart may be less useful in real life than a simpler one you can actually maintain.

The foundations of ageing well remain almost comically unmarketable: eat well, get enough protein, eat plenty of plants, move regularly, use your muscles, sleep and hydrate.

The clever stuff comes after that.

A better question to ask about supplements

Perhaps, then, we’ve been asking the wrong question.

We tend to start with a concern: What should I take for my skin? What should I take for strength? What should I take for hydration?

But step back far enough and many women aren’t really pursuing a collection of isolated benefits at all. They want enough energy to enjoy their lives. They want to stay strong and recover well. They want to keep moving, look healthy and remain capable as they get older.

That is a much more interesting nutritional question because the answer is no longer a body part.

It’s a person.

Perhaps that’s the more useful thought to take back to your own supplement cupboard. You don’t necessarily need to chase every new ingredient or turn looking after yourself into another job you’re failing to do perfectly.

Keep doing the things that matter. Eat well. Move. Use your muscles. Sleep. Hydrate. Enjoy your life. And if supplements are part of that picture, think about what you’re trying to support as a whole rather than automatically starting with another isolated concern.

Because the supplement aisle may have departments.

You were never a collection of separate problems to solve.  You were one body all along.
