Collagen has had an extraordinary career in beauty.
It has been stirred into coffees, packed into powders, added to drinks, put into creams and printed across enough pale pink packaging to make its purpose seem fairly obvious: skin.
Ask what collagen is “for” and that is probably where most of us go first. Firmer-looking skin. Elasticity. Wrinkles. Beauty from within.
Except your body has a rather different understanding of collagen. It doesn’t keep it in the beauty department. Collagen is a major structural protein found throughout the body, including in skin, bone, cartilage, tendons, ligaments and other connective tissues.
So perhaps the interesting thing about collagen isn’t simply what it might do for your skin. It’s how something so fundamental to the structure of the body became marketed as though it belonged mainly beside the moisturiser.
The beauty industry made collagen famous. Your body gave it a much bigger job.

Collagen is less like decoration and more like scaffolding
The word “collagen” can sound like an ingredient invented relatively recently by somebody in product development. It is, of course, nothing of the sort.
Scientists have identified a large family of collagens, with different types performing structural roles throughout the body. Collagen helps provide tissues with strength, organisation and mechanical support. Think scaffolding rather than surface decoration.
In skin, collagen is an important part of the dermis, the deeper structural layer beneath the surface. In bone, collagen forms part of the organic framework that contributes to its structure. Tendons, which connect muscle to bone, are rich in collagen too.
The tissues are different, but the structural theme connects them. This matters because the way we shop for health encourages us to separate them. Skin has its aisle. Joints have another. Sports nutrition has another. Bone health appears somewhere else entirely.
Your connective tissues did not agree to this arrangement.
Once you understand that, collagen becomes a much more interesting subject than simply “does it help wrinkles?”
Eating collagen and making collagen aren’t quite the same thing
This is where the conversation often becomes muddled.
If collagen exists in your skin, it sounds logical that consuming collagen simply sends more collagen there. Unfortunately, digestion is not a courier service.
Dietary proteins are broken down during digestion into amino acids and smaller peptides, which can then be absorbed and used by the body. Research into collagen peptides suggests some collagen-derived peptides can also appear in circulation after ingestion.
But the important principle is simpler: providing collagen and your body forming collagen are related ideas, not identical ones.
Your body’s own collagen formation happens within a wider nutritional context. Vitamin C is a particularly important example: it contributes to normal collagen formation for the normal function of skin, bones and cartilage.
That fact is easy to read and move past, but it changes the question. Instead of asking only, How much collagen am I taking?, perhaps we should also ask:
What does normal collagen formation actually require?
That is a much more joined-up way to think about nutrition. It also removes the temptation to cast collagen as another hero ingredient working alone.
Biology rarely gives one nutrient the entire script.
So, do collagen supplements actually work?
This deserves a straight answer because collagen has accumulated both enthusiastic marketing and equally enthusiastic scepticism.
There is human research suggesting oral collagen supplementation may improve measures including skin hydration and elasticity, with several systematic reviews and meta-analyses reporting positive effects.
As with much of nutrition science, though, the evidence has nuance. Studies differ in their design, the collagen used, duration and quality, and more high-quality independent research will help us understand where supplementation is most meaningful.
That doesn’t mean collagen isn’t worth being interested in. It means we should resist turning any single ingredient into the whole story.
Because perhaps focusing only on whether collagen “works” misses something more interesting.
Collagen doesn’t operate alone in the body.
Providing collagen is one part of the picture. Your body’s normal collagen formation takes place within a wider nutritional context, with nutrients such as vitamin C playing an established role.
So rather than asking only:
How much collagen am I taking?
There’s a broader question worth asking:
What does normal collagen formation actually require?
And that is where collagen becomes much more interesting than a single beauty ingredient.
It becomes part of a wider conversation about the skin, bones, cartilage and connective tissues that make up the same moving body.
Not one hero ingredient doing one hero job, but biology doing what biology tends to do: working as a system.
Collagen gets more interesting when we leave the bathroom
Skin dominates the collagen conversation, but research increasingly extends into exercise and musculoskeletal health.
A 2024 systematic review and meta-analysis examined collagen peptide supplementation alongside physical training in healthy adults. Across 19 studies involving 768 participants, the researchers reported favourable effects for several outcomes including fat-free mass, tendon morphology and maximal strength. There is an important detail, though: the certainty of the evidence ranged from moderate to very low depending on the outcome.
In other words, interesting does not mean proven beyond doubt. And collagen certainly shouldn’t be mistaken for a replacement for resistance training or adequate dietary protein.
In fact, that is exactly where the broader story becomes useful. A tendon doesn’t become stronger simply because collagen appeared in your cupboard. Muscle doesn’t become stronger because you bought creatine. Bone health isn’t solved by one mineral.
The body responds to what you do as well as what you consume. Movement provides mechanical stimulus. Food provides energy and nutrients. Sleep and recovery matter. Genetics, hormones, age and lifestyle are part of the picture too.
Supplements live inside that system. They are not the system.

Your skin is part of an active body too
This may be one of the strangest consequences of putting skin into a separate “beauty” category: we can start behaving as though skin exists independently of the person wearing it.
But your skin belongs to the same body that walks, lifts, sweats, sleeps, eats and recovers.
We saw a fascinating example of this in the research discussed in our strength article, where resistance exercise has even been studied for its effects on skin structure. That doesn’t turn dumbbells into skincare. It tells us something much more interesting.
The boundaries between “beauty”, “fitness” and “health” are often much clearer on packaging than they are inside us.
Perhaps that is why the collagen conversation is worth broadening. Not because skin suddenly becomes unimportant. Wanting your skin to look healthy is a perfectly reasonable thing to care about.
But you can care about your skin without pretending it is an isolated project.
What actually supports collagen?
This is where it would be very easy to produce a heroic list of ten ingredients and announce that you need every one of them.
That isn’t how I’d think about it.
Start with food. Adequate overall nutrition matters because the body needs amino acids and micro-nutrients to build and maintain tissues. Vitamin C has an established role in normal collagen formation. Protein-rich foods supply amino acids, while fruit and vegetables contribute vitamin C and a much wider range of nutrients.
Then there are the things that have nothing to do with supplements. Smoking accelerates skin ageing. Excessive ultraviolet exposure damages skin. Movement gives connective tissues physical demands to respond to. Sleep, activity and the rest of your diet do not stop mattering because you bought a collagen powder.
This is one of the reasons the phrase “beauty from within” has always felt slightly incomplete.
Of course beauty comes from within. Everything comes from within. That is where your body is.
The more useful idea is that healthy-looking skin is one visible part of a much larger biological picture.
Why we didn’t want to make “just a collagen product”
This thinking influenced FitGlo® from the beginning.
It would have been easy to make collagen the whole story. Consumers understand it. The category already exists. Put marine collagen in a sachet, talk about beauty and stop there.
But that would reproduce the same fragmented thinking we were trying to move away from.
FitGlo® does contain 7,000mg of marine collagen. But collagen doesn't sit in the formulation by itself. Alongside it are vitamin C, hyaluronic acid and Silicium–Mesoporosil®, as part of a much broader formulation that also includes creatine, electrolytes, vitamins, minerals and other active nutrients.
Vitamin C has a particularly clear relationship to the collagen story: it contributes to normal collagen formation for the normal function of skin, bones and cartilage.
And then there is silicium, an ingredient that receives considerably less attention than collagen. FitGlo® provides 50mg of Silicium – Mesoporosil® within the formulation.
That doesn't mean we're going to take every ingredient sitting beside collagen and describe it as a “collagen booster”. Nutrition is considerably more nuanced than that, and different ingredients have different roles and different levels of evidence behind them.
What it does show is the thinking behind the formulation.
We weren't interested in treating collagen as though its only relevance begins and ends with beauty. Collagen is a structural protein found in skin, certainly, but also in bone and other connective tissues. And FitGlo® itself was designed with a similarly broader view of the woman taking it: someone who may care about how her skin looks, but also wants to move, train, recover and continue feeling capable in her body.
That's why FitGlo® became a broader active-nutrition formulation rather than simply another collagen sachet.
It doesn't mean more ingredients magically multiply the effects of collagen. And FitGlo® doesn't replace good food, movement, sleep, sunscreen or the other decidedly less glamorous things that matter.
The point isn't to make collagen do more jobs. It's to stop pretending collagen was only ever about beauty.
The same thinking extends beyond collagen to muscle function, hydration, energy metabolism and bone health. Not because the body needs a product for every department, but because there were never really departments in the first place.

Maybe collagen was never the whole story
None of this means you need to stop thinking about collagen and skin. It means you can think bigger.
Collagen is part of what gives skin its structure, but it also belongs to bone, cartilage, tendons and connective tissues throughout the body. Your body forms it within a wider nutritional environment. And the research into taking collagen as a supplement, while interesting, is more nuanced than the most confident beauty claims might lead you to believe.
Perhaps that is the most useful way to approach supplements generally: be curious about ingredients and look at the evidence, but occasionally step back from the label and ask what the body itself is doing.
Because your skin isn’t living one life while your muscles, bones and connective tissues live another. They belong to the same person.
Your body has never considered collagen a beauty ingredient. It has always considered it part of the structure that holds you together.
